The correspondence isthe largest portion of the collection and includes not only letters received bySinclair, but also retained carbons of letters and notes sent by him or written bysecretaries on his behalf. Correspondents include writers and translators,politicians, philosophers, educators, businessmen, journalists, physicians, artists,editors and publishers, as well as Sinclair "fans" and family members. Also presentare copies and transcripts of correspondence, 1814-1879, relating to CommodoreArthur Sinclair and to the Southworth family. The Miscellaneous series includesagreements and contracts, book production related materials, copies of 80th birthdaygreetings, an EPIC organization plan, etc.

Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1878. Sinclair was an American author, novelist, journalist, and political activist who wrote many books in several genres. He is most well-known for his exposé, The Jungle regarding conditions in Chicago's meat packing plants, which influenced the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906.
